“I haven’t been sleeping well. Maybe changing things will help.”
That sounded strange. David hated changing things. He bought the same toothpaste, used the same coffee mug, and parked in the same spot at the grocery store.

Then I noticed something else. Every time I moved, David seemed to wake up.
Around midnight, I got up to use the bathroom. When I returned, he was sitting halfway up in bed.

I woke sometime after three and realized David wasn’t in bed.
The bathroom was empty.

“Where were you?”

“You went outside.”
“Just for a minute.”
By breakfast, I was convinced something was wrong.
That evening, I finally confronted him.
